This “cartoonised” image of a goosefish was shared with us by marine scientist and educator Martina Gaglioti. Martina created this and other pictures from real photos taken during the 2023 field season of Ocean Exploration Trust’s E/V Nautilus, which Martina participated in as a scientist ashore. The picture that led to this particular image was taken during the NA153 Johnston Atoll expedition. Scroll to the end of the Round-Up for more on Martina’s work! More deep-sea photos shared through DOSI can be found on our Flickr page. You can share your own amazing images through the Round-Up here.
Welcome back! This week’s Deep-Sea Round-Up features research on marine protections, shifting habitats of gelatinous zooplankton, and the effects of volcanic ash on hydrothermal vent animals. We’re also still inviting applications for a DOSI Communication Manager, so please share the news with anyone who may be interested. Other upcoming deadlines include registrations for the Ocean Discovery League’s Deep Ocean Training and Mentoring Program and pre-proposals for NOAA Ocean Exploration funding opportunities. Enjoy!
